Update: What’s Next

As we await the recommendation of Queens Borough President Helen Marshall, here’s a quick outline of the next steps in the process of approving the city’s plan to develop Willets Point:

After the plan goes before the community board, it goes to the Borough President for 30 days, the City Planning Commission for 60 days and the City Council for 50 days.

Stay tuned, things are looking good.

News: Queens Democratic Leaders to Support Monserrate?

As Liz Benjamin points out in the Daily Politics, there are many people keeping an eye on what happens in the upcoming primary for the 13th State Senate District here in New York. There is speculation that the Queens Democratic leaders will throw their support to current Councilman Hiram Monserrate - the main opponent of developing Willets Point - instead of the incumbent John Sabini.

There’s a lot of internal debate in the organization over which of the candidates deserves the support of the QDP. Liz links to a good summary of what’s been going on with Councilman Monserrate and the investigation that is taking place regarding his potential misuse of Council funds.

Whether or not the development of Willets Point would be better off with CM Monserrate in the State Senate is hard to say since the City Council will do its part of the ULURP process this year, well before he would make the switch. In addition, if things carry on into 2009, his replacement could very well be an opponent of the plan.

If Monserrate is elected to the State Senate this year, he’ll take office in 2009, while Mayor Bloomberg will remain in office.
