Chop Shop
Review: Chop Shop
When I started DWP I didn’t think I’d be referencing the Boston Globe for news on Willets Point, but they’ve got a review of the film Chop Shop.
The Globe details the basics of the film, including the storyline of a fictional 12 year old boy who does everything he can to survive in the Iron Triangle. From stealing purses and car parts to selling candy on the train and not attending school, the character is profiled as an example of the lifestyle of Willets Point.
The article makes note that the 2000 census reported 1 person living in Willets Point but also suggests that if the filmmaker did his research and made Chop Shop an accurate film, there may be many more unofficial residents of the area.
I’ll have to see the film for myself before forming any kind of opinion on it. In the same spirit as the Globe article, though, if the film is accurate in its portrayal of life in the Iron Triangle, it’d make me feel even more like relocating these businesses to clean and develop the area could only be a good thing.
And on an unrelated note, Let’s Go Mets! They’ve been a ton of fun to watch the past three games, and I hope they keep it up over the weekend.
