News: Wild Press Conferences at Washington Sq. Park Today

Sounds like things have been pretty crazy in Washington Square Park today outside of the hearings on Willets Point. According to a couple readers down at the events today, here’s what happened.

  • Willets Point protesters joined in with those protesting the Lower East Side rezoning plans. Turn out for the WP protest was moderate but loud.
  • The WP protest had a garbage truck with an anti-Bloomberg sign on it circle the park.
  • The rally in favor of the plan was going well until it was overrun by shouting ACORN members and the workers who came with Councilman Monserrate.
  • Councilman Monserrate was overheard on more than one occassion saying that in the end the plan to develop the area will happen.

Wow. Really wish I could have been there, but the fact that Monserrate ultimately sees this project happening is great. I do, too.

You can catch the video coverage of the events from NY1 here.

  1. update from the CPC meeting

One of the most compelling things–and the xommisionwe just agreed with me in her losing remarks on hunters point– is the number if pwoplw who are testifying about living two and three families in a small apartment in queens..

Most of the people are begging foe more affordable housing and complaining of rampant over crowding…

So now Helen Marshall or whoever is going to present the WP case is going to get up and present a plan for almost SIX THOUSAND beamd new affordable units in quuens..

I can’t see how the previous testimony about people making 20 grand a year and begging foe a place to live doesn’t support the WP plan..which btw turns 1500 jobs into 6000 permananr jobs and 20000 construction jobs

    More later

  5. crazy day,,

suffice to say the key word here is affordable housing.. the panel seemed very into cleaning up the blight and picking up 5500 units of housing without having to displace anyone..

the EDC person who was presenting on housing said 20% is the floor and it could go higher..

thing is.. the panel said the will NEED TO submit a solid percentage with their final draft for vote by the CPC and the person presenting said they are still working on the math of what is doable from a financial standpoint..

the head commissioner said this NEEDS TO BE resolved before they vote.. while the EDC spokeswoman looked like she is going to have some late nights ahead of her..

so 20% aint gonna cut it to get the ACORN “nuts” on board.. with ACORN comes the 30 or so councilpeople who signed Hiram’s letter

BTW — where was Hiram at the meeting?? i didnt see him present AT ALL .. guess cause there were no cameras..

i can do more on the cast of charecters for another time..

  7. hey donna.. you were there?? what were you wearing? most of the women were with Acorn and the Lower East Side stragglers….

did you hear andizzone say most of the workers in WP are “disturbed” and couldnt find a job anywhere else if they had to??

there’s a man without all his marbles..no doubt.. I had a short talk with him in the park which was like mind numbing
