News: Monserrate Receives Donations from WP Opponents
Over at The Real Deal, there’s a report on the donations made by businesses opposing to the development of Willets Point to Councilman Hiram Monserrate’s campaign. According to the latest campaign filings, at least $37,500 has been donated by these businesses in Willets Point.
According to the article, members of the Willets Point Industry and Realty Association gave the bulk of the aforementioned $37,500.
Councilman Monserrate is currently running unopposed for a seat in the State Senate.
Although the article might insinuate that Councilman Monserrate is fighting the Mayor’s plan because of the money he has received from these businesses, I’m not really sure that’s the case. I can’t come up with a good reason why he’s defending the area as it currently stands, but these donations were probably so large because he has been the most vocal defender of the area as it currently stands. That being said, I highly doubt he changes his mind on this issue after receiving this money.

Councilman Monserrate has simply expressed support for fair treatment for the local businesses as well as a commitment to affordable housing. He is doing his job, representing the needs of his constituency, as such his constituency shows support by donating to his campaign. This is the american system. How much money is Mayor Bloomberg paying ClaireSchulman to push this project? Monserrate supports development in Willets Point, he wants to see it done responsibly. This is admirable. I don’t believe the money will sway his view, which has been clear from outset.
so Monserrate is NOT on the take but Shulman is?
the article just points out that Monserrate collected over 15% of his campaign contributions from Willets Point Business owners which is a significant amount..
the author should as the question as to why the business owners donated such significant amounts to his campaign.. and why they skirted the campaign finance laws to do it..
