As reported in the Queens Chronicle, the newest excuse that the opposition of the Willets Point development project has come up with is congestion. Here’s a quick excerpt from the article:
Currently, the opposition group is focusing on traffic congestion that the project would create. According to the EIS, the plan would generate increased traffic on the Van Wyck and Whitestone Expressways as well as the Grand Central Parkway. “You can’t move in and out of the area now,” Fodera said. “I can’t imagine what it will be like when there are Mets games and the U.S. Open.”
If you’re unfamiliar with the whole background of the issue, the article has a pretty good summary of what’s happened in the last few months.
If anyone here has driven around Willets Point during a time that’s not a Mets game - which I definitely have - there’s nothing even close to congestion in the area. Development in the area might things a little bit more hectic when the Mets are playing games, but honestly it takes forever to get out of a Shea Stadium parking lot, construction or not.
If this is the best new excuse they can come up with, I think the proponents of the plan are doing pretty well.
