Opinion: Queens Gazette Reader not a Fan of Development Corporations

The Queens Gazette has a letter from an angry reader from Great Neck regarding development corporations and their role in the city.  He uses Willets Point as his example of “pigs feeding at a trough” and rants about Mayor Bloomberg’s general approach to development throughout the city.

The letter, entitled “Taxpayers Foot the Bill,” suggests that large developers merely look for shortcuts and tax subsidies in order to succeed instead of doing hard work the old-fashioned way.  It also makes note of the issue of the revolving door, which occurs when someone in government leaves his position to take a position in a group that had been doing business with the city.

The issues brought up by the reader are certainly not ones that can be ignored.  The revolving door is definitely an issue in governmental affairs.  That being said, the Mayor’s plan is still absolutely worth it to remake Willets Point into a model urban neighborhood for both New York City and the rest of the country.
